it was nothing compared to that picture though
my favourite injury is a massive 4 inch by 4 inch gouge in my left leg inner thigh though which went all the way to the thigh bone, luckily it didnt get any veins. in fact there was surprisingly little blood. had 10 internal stitches and 20 external to repair that. and how did i get that? playing kiss and catches as a kid!
I dislocated both my knees surfing one day, edge dug in and flipped the board into them. Made for a difficult swim back to shore. It was winter, so the cold seemed to deaden the pain, and then a rigue wave too the board and extended the leash to it's full extent which popped one back into place. Some dude on the ebach then popped the other one back into palce for me. Never did thank him properly. Awful drive home though, learnt my lesson, and never surfed alone again
ripped a neck muscle at judo. Walked into the doctors with my head resting on my shoulder and whole body twitching in pain
"is it an emergancy?"
....
they gave me vallium for it
Surfing a point break in Morocco, got blown in too deep by a cross shore wind and took off on reef (!?)tried to pull out but couldnt and got sucked around the reef and pulled back under, shredded my feet and hands. blood everywhere, glad there were no sharks!! Oh, and tore a hole in my breast from the puppies being squashed in my wetsuit plus lots of paddling. turned in to a sea ulcer because i refused to stay out of the water, now looks like a bullet hole scar. nice!
Love your sense of humour........
I've had a few ankle tweaks on the sakteboard, haven't ridden one for many years now .. but my ankle still plays up after a big training session. Also recurring pain from a sprained shoulder from too many snowboard stacks to mention.
Nothing serious yet ..
It's this one. Seems really trivial, but it has been quite life changing - in my attitudes to my body, training and view of sporting injuries.
I first started getting little twinges in the knee at the back end of last year - but only after about 8 miles of running. Not enough to take notice of. It's now the first of July, and I sit here, my bandaged leg in elevation, still shaking off the effects of the general anaesthetic. My season is really over before it has began. All I can do is take some general steps at rehabilitation and strength building, with the goals that I had for this year put back to the next.
In January, in a 5K road race, the knee went for the first time, sore and swollen, I eased of training straight away. But still did an XC race the following weekend, the first of february. I've not really run since - except for a 4mile easy run in March, a 10K road race (mistake!) on March 29th, and a 5K LT run on 11th April.
Through Feb and March I had physio - and tried to do everything right. But to no avail. The impact of what happened on the 11th was quite alarming - the leg immovable for a few days due to the swelling. I've not had a solid night of sleep since - with the leg hurting whenever I turn over and it get's caught in the bedclothes.
Went to the GP and got a referral to a sports specialist. The only problem I have was the length of time involved - this was partly my fault as work kept me from going sooner - but really, only a week or two would have been saved. The diagnosis - you'll never be able to run again, unless you have an operation. Hmm.
So, after the arthroscopy yesterday, the diagnosis was confirmed. The meniscus was kind of folded over and all torn. Relatively easy to reshape and tidy up. And the prognosis should be good.
What has changed?
I now think that training is more important than racing. And I think of it more as preparation, rather than training.
I now think that technique, together with an holistic approach to the body is more important than going for a few runs at LT pace, or whatever.
I now have training goals, rather than racing ones, and health figures quite highly in those goals.
Before this year, I might have thought that, say, Nadal missing Wimbledon would have somehow devalued the status of whoever wins it this year. Now I don't. Getting yourself in to a fit shape to contend the championship is as important an aspect of any other parts of your performance.
As I said, nothing dramatic - I'm not really sure why the injury occurred - a combination of poor techinque, doing too much, being too old, and not having developed other physiological attributes that might have reduced the amount of wear/tear on the knee - i.e. a "simple" overuse injury.
But, it means that I've lost 12 months.
and another horse one
sprng pelvis, slipped IS joint, torn meniscus L knee, partial rupture L achilles, fractured ribs - had to walk off the mountain for that one everyone more concerend that daughter was with me she reassured everyone that it couldn't have been too serious due to the language - me swear surely not
Fell from the top of an artificual climbing tower as my rope wasn't anchored properly.
Broken back in 2 places, L1 & T12. Broken left tibia, broken right tibia and fibia and compression fracture to ankle. Broken right wrist.
Got those pictures somewhere...
